Turtle power in Frejus
Baby sea turtles born on the beaches of St Aygulf
There has been great care taken over the nesting site of a female loggerhead turtle who was seeing laying and burying her eggs earlier this year on the beach of Saint Aygulf north of Saint Tropez.
The area has been cordoned off, protected and under video surveillance since it was discovered by a dog walker back in July. Experts and local authorities have finally been rewarded with the emergence of four baby sea turtles after 70 days of incubation. The turtles are a protected loggerhead species, named Caretta Caretta. A hatch such as this has never before been recorded on the coast of mainland France.
There are thought to be around 78 eggs present in the nest, but so far only four have hatched. The four were initially kept in an incubator in order to further their chances of survival and on Monday 3rd October 2016 they made their way for the first time into the waters of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.
