What's On in Saint Tropez in 2017

With the close of 2016 we look forward to the big events of 2017

The glitz and glamour of Saint Tropez during the summer months can sometimes eclipse this pretty old port town and mask the long history of this part of the French Riviera. However the events that take place throughout the year give us a glorious mix of new and old, traditional and modern.

With everything from horticulture to yachting, shopping to music and the elegance of vineyards to the roar of a Harley Davidson...there really isn't a bad time to visit Saint Tropez.

January

The PACA region (Provence-Alpes-Cote-d'Azur) celebrates the Circus Arts in January and into the month of February. Hosted every two years the Biennale Internationale des Arts du Cirque brings around 300 artists to the region from across France and the world. Some 100,000 spectators are expected to enjoy this month-long festival. Visit their website to find out what shows are on near you.

February

Bringing some colour into the area the mimosa blooms are a great prelude to Spring. The near-by town of Bormes les Mimosas hosts perhaps one of the most famous festivals that celebrates this soft yellow flower, the Corso Fleuri. But a drive along the Route du Mimosa at any point in February is a real treat!

April

The end of April sees the weather warming up and the sunshine hours stretching out into the evenings. It also brings a touch of tradition to the region with the Bravade de Frejus. This festival honours St Francois de Paule and 2017 will be 510 years since his death. Prepare to enjoy some traditional folk dancing, music and of course a parade of Napoleon style soldiers through the town.

May

The Bravade de Saint Tropez takes place just a few weeks later from the 16th to 18th May 2017. Proud locals dress up in empire uniforms, fire off muskets and march with the band. The ‘real’ Saint Tropez behind the glitz, this is the most culturally important festival in Saint Tropez and is a huge local favourite.

But before you hear the firing of muskets in May you are likely to hear the roar of hundreds of Harley Davidsons. The Harley Davidson Euro Festival is possibly one of the most exciting, exhilarating and down right entertaining events in the Saint Tropez calender. A great four day long festival in the streets of Grimaud and around Saint Tropez, this is an enjoyable family experience.

June

As a port town, Saint Tropez is of course well known for yachting and sailing, and the Giraglia Rolex Cup is one of the most renowned offshore races in the Mediterranean. Organised by the Yacht Club Italiano and the Societe Nautique de Saint-Tropez, the Cup consists of three days inshore racing in the bay of Saint-Tropez followed by a 243 nautical mile offshore race.

Also in June is the wonderfully rich festival that celebrates Saint-Jean. A summer solstice-esque type of event it is very much based on the traditions of neighbouring Catalonia in Spain. This takes places in towns and villages across the Golfe du Saint Tropez region. The locals will dress up in traditional costume and gather in the main square for music and dancing in the evening. Bonfires are then lit and the party lasts well into the night.

August

The summer months in Saint Tropez are the perfect time to relax, enjoy a chilled glass of rose and listen to the dulcet tones of jazz on a sultry evening. Luckily the Wine & Grape Festival in Frejus at the start of the month and the Ramatuelle Jazz Festival near the end of August will supply you with both wine and music in a dream setting.

September

The month of September brings with it the winds and one of the most famous and exciting events in the Saint Tropez calendar, Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. This classic regatta ends the Mediterranean sailing season. With 300 yachts, both traditional and modern, this regatta creates a magnificent sight both spectators and competitors and brings an autumn week full of maritime effervescence.
