New Year's eve 2016 and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was stopped by a policeman in the port of Saint Tropez for cycling on the wrong side of the street.

Spending the holiday season at his residence in Cap Negré, just 30km away from Saint-Tropez, the keen cyclist took the short trip into the festive port town where a local policeman spotted him travelling against the flow of traffic.

When asked to get off his bike and walk with it through the port area the former president was reportedly more than happy to oblige and very amiable. The policeman admitted that he did not recognise Sarkozy at first but said that would not have impacted his decision to approach the cyclist to ask him to dismount.
