- “A stunning Villa in beautiful gardens with a unique pool and Koi pond. We had a fantastic holiday in this charming luxury property. It's close to the delights of St Tropez, the beaches of Pampelonne and many great restaurants and yet is secluded in a peaceful secure private estate amongst vineyards. We have rented many properties in the South of France and along with the fantastic, effortless service on hand, this is by far the best!" - Guest Feedback
The older part of Cogolin is built on a small hill (cougoul) around the town hall square; the town has wide streets and is quite sprawling. Up on the hill is the clock tower and cemetery, while the town has lots of the little smoking pipe shops that Cogolin is famous for, as well as other crafts such as carpet-weaving, reeds for musical instruments, pottery and ceramics. Down on the coast the ports of Cogolin are both full of cafes, restaurants and boutiques- good for a wander and a long lunch looking out over the yachts. Many activities are held throughout the year in Cogolin such as exhibitions, flea markets, concerts and festivals, giving this Provencal- village-of-3-parts a very welcoming feel.
Cogolin, like so many villages in this part of the world, is a town of several parts- and with several distinct characters. The old town is located several kilometres back from the coast, while down by the sea there are two marina villages- Port Cogolin is the older, smaller (and more charming) port, while Marines de Cogolin is a more modern 'seaside village' with a large yacht port-and a feel of a created but pleasant Provencal-style town. Cogolin is situated between Hyeres and St Maxime, with the Maures hills rising behind and the Golfe de Saint Tropez stretching out before it. For those relying on public transport, you can take bus 7601 from Saint Raphael or Saint Tropez- although it will drop you off by the 'Cogolin-Foux' stop and you will have to swap to the 7702 line running from Les Arcs to get to the old part of town.
This whole area is rich in dining options. In Cogolin centre, head to the tiny bistro of Grain de Sel for lovely Provencal cooking,or to La Grange des Agapes for a Provencal theme-based menu (whole menus built around certain ingredients such as truffles or asparagus). The ports both have a selection of restaurants- La Tour des Piz is a hot favourite for pizza and Les Couleurs du Sud in Port Cogolin seems the pick of the bunch for good French food by the water. There's also Japanese and Moroccan restaurants for those who fancy a break from rich French cuisine. For Michelin-starred gastronomy, head to nearby Gassin or Saint Tropez.

The old town is dominated by a 14th century clock tower on the hill, which is all that remains after the fort was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Of interest is also the 16th century The Saint-Sauveur - Saint-Etienne church, which has a restored sundial on it with a Provencal inscription which reads 'We each have our own sun.' As you wander through the town you'll also notice many dual street name signs-with both the ancient and the modern names, the most amusing of which is the Rue Rompe Cul, meaning 'fall on your butt'. Why? Because it was the steepest of course- a common street name in France when there's worn, slippery cobblestones at work. There's also the Raimu Museum celebrating the French actor's film career and the Templier Museum exploring the history of the Knights Templar in Provence.
